The first national survey of clinical pharmacists on the use of sildenafil in general practice has been carried out, using electronic health records. The survey was conducted over a seven-month period between December 2007 and May 2008, and analysed the available data.
A total of 2,835 pharmacists from 4 general practices in the UK were invited to complete the questionnaire. Of these, 1,945 responded (9.5% of respondents), and of the remaining 2,939 (36.5%) responses, half (54.5%) did not respond. Sildenafil was dispensed in 0.9% of respondents, 0.4% of respondents, and 1.2% of respondents reported being dispensed sildenafil on a private prescription. In total, 604 pharmacists were dispensed sildenafil (50.0%).
The proportion of respondents who responded to the questionnaire was between 10.0% and 49.9%. The mean age was 33 years (range 21-50).
The results of the survey showed that sildenafil was dispensed in 0.9% of respondents, 0.4% of respondents, and 1.2% of respondents reported being dispensed sildenafil on a private prescription. In terms of the frequency of respondents who responded, sildenafil was prescribed in 0.9% of respondents, 0.4% of respondents, and 1.2% of respondents reported being prescribed sildenafil on a private prescription. In total, 2.5% of respondents had dispensed sildenafil on a private prescription.
The proportion of respondents who reported being dispensed sildenafil on a private prescription was 5.7% (n=1,965).
The results of the survey showed that the proportion of respondents who responded to the questionnaire was between 10.0% and 49.9%.
